Windows 7 OneDrive Sign In Error 0x8004de40

Summary

When trying to sign into OneDrive Desktop Client on a Windows 7 workstation you receive the following error:  There was a problem connecting to OneDrive.  Check your Internet connection, and then try again. (Error Code: 0x8004de40).

Answer/Solution

  1. Reset Windows Socket (Winsock)

    1. Open Command Prompt Admin

    2. In the Command Prompt, type the following command and hit Enter.
      netsh winsock reset catalog

  2. Reset OneDrive

    1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run.

    2. Enter or paste the command:
      %localappdata%\\Microsoft\\OneDrive\\onedrive.exe /reset

  3. Download and install Easy Fix Tool.

  4. If OneDrive is opened, close it and re-open the OneDrive application and sign in. The error should be resolved.
