AX 16.3 License and Microsoft Updates

Good day, Microsoft Updates Bring Your AX System Down by discontinuing the license functionality in AX 8 and AX 16.3 environments. These updates affect ApplicationXtender License Server installed on Windows Server 2012 R2. Please read below and let us know if you have any questions. Also, if you can time your MS updates we can help minimize the disruptions. The updates that have been identified as the cause for the licensing issue are KB4457143 and KB44557129. A detailed explanation of the update can be found by clicking here. For immediate recovery of the AX environment where KB4457143 has been applied impacting AX, please follow the steps below:

  1. Roll back the Microsoft update

  2. During the reboot of the system, the update may automatically reinstall

    1. To prevent this, please block the update from reinstallation

  3. Once the update has been rolled back, the environment should return to normal functionality

    1. *Please note, rolling back the update may lead to security vulnerability as KB4457143 is a security update. It is suggested to follow the option below to ensure the update is installed and the environment is running as intended.

      In order to allow the update to be installed and have a fully functioning AX environment, a new license will be required on the server. To complete this, please follow the steps below:

  4. Contact CASO support to coordinate a maintenance/downtime window for the new license to be installed

    1. The downtime window may range anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours

  5. Install the Microsoft update (during the scheduled maintenance timeframe)

  6. Provide CASO access to the environment to obtain the new MAC address, Hostname and Fingerprint

  7. CASO will request a new license for the AX environment and install once received

  8. Once installed, the AX environment will return to full functionality with the Microsoft updates installed
